Our Mission

Bring humanoid robotics
into students' hands.

WE Bots exists to give students the opportunity to build and contribute to a technology that is only starting to gain traction: humanoid robotics.

We're building Project JOSH, launching the Canadian Humanoid Robotics Competition, and competing in it ourselves.

Our Vision

Help define
what comes next.

We envision a future where university humanoid and home-service robotics competitions are just as prestigious and widespread as SAE competitions.

We want Western University to be one of the schools that helps define that future.

Our Values

How we work.

  1. Aim for Greatness

We aren't here to do the bare minimum. We want to build things that are genuinely impressive and push our limits.

  2. Be Realistic

We trust the vision, but we never let excitement blind us to reality. We balance every high-level goal with accurate constraints and limitations.

  3. Take Ownership

We take ownership of our projects and drive our work forward with initiative. Support and feedback are provided, but members are expected to figure things out along the way.

  4. Challenge Ideas

No idea, design, or decision is above being challenged. We believe in constructive skepticism over blindly trusting authority.

  5. Make Smart Decisions

We balance priorities rather than personal opinions, biases, or niche interests. We build what the project needs to succeed, and frame every decision through the question: Is this best for the project?

All members have opportunities to put in meaningful work. Our project scope is large, so we distribute responsibility across the team and reward those who demonstrate ambition.

Project JOSH

Just an Open
Source Humanoid.

Our mission is to bring JOSH to life. We are developing a general-purpose humanoid robot that can move autonomously, balance, and perform a range of movement tasks.

We're working toward an ambitious goal: Canada's first university-built, fully autonomous humanoid robot. As we grow the CHRC, we plan for JOSH to compete in its future seasons and at other robotics events.

  • Build a V1 full humanoid platform, software stack, and controls within two years.
  • Keep all project information fully open source, organized, and maintainable.
  • Keep the project low-cost through practical design choices and careful use of resources.

The Competition We're Creating

CHRC

Canadian Humanoid
Robotics Competition.

Humanoid robotics is growing quickly, but university competitions have yet to reflect the scale of that opportunity. We want to help change that by launching the CHRC for university and college teams, with the inaugural event planned for 2027.

The first competition focuses on the humanoid hand. Future seasons will add the upper body and biped systems, working toward a full humanoid competition in 2030.

Our ambition is to build something that lasts, with a reputation and community comparable to SAE competitions. WE Bots is both founding the competition and developing JOSH to take part in it.

  • Bring together 5–10 university and college teams for the launch.
  • Start small, then expand the competition's scope and difficulty every year.
  • Build toward a nationwide competition focused on full humanoid development and yearly redesigns.
